It is odd that I am socially outspoken and confident, yet a terrible public speaker. I remember in my final year of high school, I had to give a 3 minute speech on a book I'd read a million times, to the class of students I had know for 6 years. I was so nervous that I my hands were shaking and I couldn't read my palm cards, my voice my so quivery I could barely pronounce syllable, I was rubbing my sweaty palms on my skirt, it was just not a nice experience at all.
Fast forward four years and I have myself a job as a class tutor at uni. I dove straight into having to speak in front peers whom I don't really know, are basically the same age as me and show them whats right and wrong for 2 hours a week. It was not easy to say the least. However, it was the best thing that could have happened to my public speaking ability. I learnt hard and fast how to speak confidently to a group and not take the whole process too seriously. Well try to, anyway...
The moral of the story, is that learning is to be done in every direction you take. I started the semester ready to teach and aid the learning of others, and walked out having learnt a lot myself.
